What you should know before you buy a down comforter

The finest quality Down Comforters will have a fill power of at least 600.  They will be of baffle wall construction and have a high thread count, 100% cotton cover.  They will provide lightweight, year round warmth and come with warranty.

Fill Power

Fill Power is the measurement of the quality of the down. Fill power measures the number of cubic inches that a single ounce of down occupies.  The higher the fill power, the higher loft the comforter. The benefit is that less down is needed to fill the comforter, resulting in lightweight year round warmth. Look for down comforters with a fill power of at least 550. More luxurious quality down comforters will have a fill power of at least 600. Higher fill power down will last longer, insulate better and look fluffier.

Construction

Baffling or baffle wall refers to sewn in vertical cloth walls between the top and bottom of the comforter.  Open box design allows the down to be adjusted from one part of the comforter to another where more coverage is desited and create a distinctive comforter look.  Partially open baffle box design has baffle walls with periodic openings allowing the down to be adjusted form one part of the comforter to another and create a distinctive comforter look. Closed baffle box design keeps the down in place and prevents cold spots.

Hypoallergenic

Down that has gone through a series of steps to remove all the impurities, dirt and dander, will be noted as hypoallergenic or allergy free. Most people are not allergic to down, but rather to the impurities within the down. Not all Down Comforters are hypoallergenic. Our exceedingly rigorous cleaning process ensures that the dwon and feathers are non-allergenic, to provide relief to allergy sufferers.

Thread Count

Thread count refers to the number of threads per square inch of fabric. The finest quality Down Comforters will have a 100% cotton cover with a thread count of at least 200. The higher the thread count, the more durable and softer the cover will be. A higher thread count cover will protect the down from impurities as well as keep the fill inside the comforter. A 100% cotton cover will be breathable, lending to the insulation and fluffiness of the comforter.
